The chain articulation is reduced due to the larger pulley wheels decreasing drivetrain friction, for a smoother ride and improved energy transfer from the pedal to the tarmac.

The engineering of the pulley wheels doesn't stop there, since the long tooth profile on the lower pulley gives better chain retention where you need it.
